Introduction

Hi! My name is José Andrés, and this is my final report for the WP Credits program. Over the past few weeks, I contributed to the WordPress Photo Directory, documenting natural landscapes and community surroundings from La Luchita, Costa Rica. This report summarizes my contribution journey, the challenges I faced, the resources that helped me, and the lessons I learned throughout the project.

Teams and Projects I Contributed To

During the WP Credits program, I contributed to the WordPress Photo Directory team. My goal was to create and submit original photographs that met the project’s quality standards while showcasing part of Costa Rica’s natural beauty.

When I was choosing a contribution area, Photo Directory immediately caught my attention because it seemed like the most accessible option for me. At the same time, I realized I had the opportunity to visit La Luchita, where a close family member lives, and document its landscapes.

Learning Resources

The main resource I used throughout the project was the official WordPress Photo Directory Guidelines. Before taking photographs and before submitting them, I constantly referred to the documentation to make sure every image followed the project’s standards regarding quality, composition, and acceptable content.

Another important resource was the guidance provided during the WP Credits course itself. Throughout the semester, my mentor explained every stage of the project, answered questions during class, and made sure everyone understood the next steps. Because the instructions were clear and detailed, I rarely found myself stuck or needing additional help.

As part of the onboarding process, I also joined the WordPress Slack workspace. Although I did not need to ask many questions there, it was interesting to see how contributors communicate and collaborate within the WordPress community.

Some of the resources I used include:

  • WordPress Photo Directory Guidelines
  • WordPress.org
  • WP Credits course materials
  • WordPress Slack
  • Guidance from my mentor

Challenges and Solutions

One of the first challenges was understanding the Photo Directory guidelines. They contain many small details that determine whether a photograph is appropriate for publication. Before submitting anything, I spent time reading the documentation carefully so I could avoid common mistakes.

Another challenge was traveling to La Luchita. The community is located around two hours from where I live, so I wanted to make the trip worthwhile. Once I arrived, I also realized that many of the places I originally wanted to photograph were not suitable because they contained people, cars, graffiti, or distracting elements. Rather than insisting on those locations, I explored nearby areas until I found natural landscapes that better represented the place while also complying with the Photo Directory requirements.

Fortunately, I never encountered major technical issues during the project. The documentation and the guidance provided through WP Credits were clear enough that I always knew what I needed to do next.

My Contributions

Throughout the program, I contributed original photographs to the WordPress Photo Directory that showcase the natural beauty of La Luchita, Costa Rica. At the time of writing this report, twenty photographs have been accepted.

My contributions include:

I will also include screenshots of my accepted photographs and my WordPress.org profile as evidence of my work.

Key Learnings from the WP Credits Program

One of the biggest things I learned is that contributing to WordPress is much broader than writing code. Before starting WP Credits, I assumed that programming was the main way to participate in the project. Through the Photo Directory, I discovered that photography, core, translations, and many other types of contributions are equally valuable.

Another lesson was the importance of following community standards. A good photograph is not necessarily a good Photo Directory submission. Every image needs to respect the project’s guidelines, include proper information, and meet quality expectations. Paying attention to those details taught me that contributing to open source is about creating something useful for everyone, not just uploading content.

Finally, exploring the Photo Directory introduced me to a global community of contributors. Seeing photographs from different countries made me appreciate the diversity of the WordPress ecosystem and motivated me to contribute images representing Costa Rica.

New Skills Gained

Technical skills

  • Understanding the WordPress Photo Directory submission process.
  • Following the official Photo Directory guidelines.
  • Writing titles, descriptions, and alternative text for submissions.
  • Using WordPress.org as a contributor.

Soft skills

  • Planning and organizing field visits.
  • Paying attention to detail.
  • Adapting to unexpected situations.
  • Time management.
  • Documenting my work throughout a long-term project.

Personal Reflections and Next Steps

Looking back, my favorite part of the project was visiting La Luchita. Besides taking photographs, I had the opportunity to spend quality time with a close family member who lives there, which made the experience much more meaningful. The landscapes are beautiful, and walking through the area while searching for the right photographs was something I genuinely enjoyed.

I was also surprised by the size of the WordPress Photo Directory. Before participating in WP Credits, I had never explored it in depth. Seeing photographs contributed by people from all over the world helped me understand how collaborative the WordPress community really is. It was exciting to think that my own photographs would become part of that collection.

After completing WP Credits, I would like to continue contributing to the WordPress Photo Directory whenever I have the opportunity. Costa Rica has many incredible places that deserve to be shared, and I think contributing photographs is a simple but meaningful way to help the community while also representing my country. This experience showed me that open source contributions do not always require programming. Sometimes, sharing something as simple as a well-composed photograph can also make a valuable contribution.
