Looking Back on the Experience

Participating in the WPCredits program gave me the opportunity to contribute to WordPress in a way I had never considered before. At the beginning, I thought the project would mainly involve taking photographs and uploading them to the Photo Directory. By the end of the experience, I realized that contributing to an open-source project also means following community standards, receiving feedback, and learning from the review process.

Working on this project allowed me to see how much effort goes into maintaining the quality of shared resources and how every contribution, no matter how small, becomes part of something much larger.

What I Learned

One of the biggest lessons from this project was understanding that quality is not only about taking a visually appealing photograph. Every accepted image must also be useful, well-composed, properly focused, and follow the Photo Directory guidelines.

I also learned that feedback is an important part of contributing. While not every photograph I submitted was accepted, every review helped me better understand the expectations of the directory and showed me areas where I can continue improving.

Another valuable lesson was discovering more about the community space I photographed. Before visiting, I thought it was a relatively small place, but while documenting it I realized it offers many different spaces and activities that benefit the local community. Photographing the location allowed me to appreciate it from a different perspective.

What I Would Do Differently

If I were to complete this project again, I would spend more time reviewing each photograph before submitting it. I would pay even closer attention to small details such as distracting objects, focus, and composition, and I would compare similar photographs more carefully before deciding which ones to upload.

I would also apply everything I learned about writing clear and concise Alt Text from the very beginning of the process.

Looking Ahead

This experience changed the way I see WordPress. Before participating in WPCredits, I mostly associated WordPress with building websites. Now I understand that it is supported by a global community that collaborates in many different ways, including projects like the Photo Directory.

I would like to continue contributing photographs in the future whenever I have the opportunity to document interesting places.

Final Thoughts

Completing this project has been a rewarding experience. Beyond improving my photography skills, it introduced me to a collaborative open-source community and showed me that even a small contribution can become part of a resource used by people around the world.
